<descript>
These digital maps are a reformulation of previously published maps, primarily maps of states. The reformulation gives all the maps the same structure and format, allowing them to be combined into regional maps. The associated data tables have information about age and lithology of the map units, also in a standard format.
<purpose>Provide digital maps and databases that, because of their common structure and format, allow creation of regional maps that depict age and lithology of map units.</purpose>
<supplinf>The data is provided in decimal degrees and in Lambert Conformal Conic projection. The data is provided in both coverage and shapefile format, and includes supplemental attribute tables. No attempt was made to reconcile differences in mapping across state boundaries.</supplinf>

<procdesc>Adjusted the perimeter of the coverage to match a reference dataset of state boundaries derived from 1:100,000 scale digital line graphs. This allows the map to be used together with adjoining state maps referenced to the same boundary data. Replaced a section of the state boundary that follows the Colorado River with a line from 1:100,000 scale digital line graph hydrographic files. The state and international boundaries have a source of US001 in the AAT.</procdesc>

<procdesc>A number of faults on the printed map have small breaks that were originally coded as scratch boundaries. We concluded that these breaks were meant to imply approximate location, and so have changed the label on 281 arcs to reflect that interpretation. These adjustments have a source of CA102 in the AAT.</procdesc>

<procdesc>To prepare a uniform AAT file, the following items were added: arc-code, arc-para1, and arc-para2. The last two are not used. Arc-code was populated, using the information in the original item, and inspection of the printed map. Then the original items in the AAT were deleted (LTYPE, SEL, SYMB).</procdesc>

<procstep>
<procdesc>To prepare a uniform PAT file, the following items were added: ORIG_LABEL, SGMC_LABEL, UNIT_LINK, SOURCE, UNIT_AGE, ROCKTYPE1, and ROCKTYPE2. ORIG_LABEL was populated from the original item (PTYPE). New unit designations for SGMC_LABEL were developed by Paul Stone, David Miller, and Steve Ludington, based on the geologic literature, personal communications, and personal knowledge. UNIT_LINK was populated with information in the accompanying attribute table CAunits, UNIT_AGE was populated with information in the accompanying attribute table CAage, and ROCKTYPE1 and ROCKTYPE2 were populated with information in the accompanying attribute table CAlith. Then the original items in the PAT were deleted (PTYPE, SEL, SYMB).</procdesc>

<procstep>
<procdesc>Because California has such complex geology, many of the original map units contained a wide variety of lithologies and are difficult to characterize. We subdivided many of the units, grouping outcrops with common characterisitcs that allowed a coherent description. For example, the map unit SO (Silurian and Ordovician sedimentary rocks) was divided into SO1 (southeastern California - primarily dolomite and limestone), SO2 (eastern Sierra Nevada - primarily argillite and sandstone), and SO3 (eastern Klamath Mountains - primarily graywacke and phyllite). These subunits were named by simply appending an integer and placing the resulting label into SGMC_LABEL. Their geographic, lithologic, and age characteristics are recorded in the accompanying attribute tables (CAunits, CAlith, CAage).</procdesc>
