<p>This feature layer contains polygons of bays, estuaries,
lakes and reservoirs where water quality objectives are not being attained. The
waterbodies in these catchments are listed under section 303(d) of the Clean
Water Act as impaired due to a pollutant.</p>
<p><b>Dioxin Toxic Equivalents (DTE)</b></p>
<p>Polychlorinated biphenyls are a group of man-made
organic chemicals consisting of carbon, hydrogen and chlorine atoms, with the
number of chlorine atoms determining their chemical and physical properties as
well as their toxicity. They have been shown to cause cancer in animals as well
as a number of serious non-cancer health effects in animals, including: effects
on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and
other health effects.</p>
<p><b>Invasive Species</b></p>
<p>Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are plants, animals or
disease agents that are not native to an ecosystem. They threaten native ecosystems
by outcompeting native species and/or native species may lack defense
mechanisms if preyed upon. They may also affect human systems by impacting
fisheries productivity, undermining water delivery infrastructure, and reducing
ecosystem services.</p>
<p><b>Mercury</b></p>
<p>Mercury often enters waterbodies from air sources like
coal-fired power plants whose particulates settle into nearby waters or from
legacy mining operations. Improper handling and disposal of products containing
mercury could also release the chemical into the air and water. When a
waterbody is impaired for mercury, mercury can bioconcentrate in fish and other
aquatic organisms. Their consumption poses a human health risk, particularly if
the chemical form is methylmercury, which causes a variety of severe human
illnesses.</p>
<p><b>Nutrients</b></p>
<p>Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for
plant growth and are fertilizer components. Excess nutrients, such as from
agricultural runoff, can affect dissolved oxygen in waterbodies by accelerating
the growth of algae and aquatic plants. The subsequent decay of these organic
materials quickly deplete dissolved oxygen, harming aquatic life and habitat.</p>
<p><b>pH</b></p>
<p>pH is an expression of hydrogen ion concentration in water.
Low pH refers to acidic solutions, while high pH refers to basic solutions. The
pH of a water body can alter the chemical state of many pollutants, which can
increase the exposure of toxic metals and nutrients to aquatic plants and
animals. </p>

<p><b>Sediment</b></p>
<p>Sediment pollution refers to suspended organic and inorganic
matter that is largely contributed by erosion of soil. Sediment pollution can
clog aquatic organism gills and impact their life cycle negatively. Sediment
loads can also increase the cost of drinking water and can result in odor and
taste problems. Additionally, toxic chemicals become attached to sediment
particles that may be released into the environment.</p>
