This map was created using water quality data from GAMA Groundwater Information System (https://gamagroundwater.waterboards.ca.gov/gama/gamamap/public/), which pulls water quality data from a variety of sources. Domestic well inventory is from the Department of Water Resources OSWCR database (https://data.ca.gov/dataset/well-completion-reports) and state small water system inventory is from the Division of Drinking Water SAFER Clearinghouse (https://wbappsrv.waterboards.ca.gov/safer/login?returnUrl=%2Fhome). |

In accordance with SB-200, the map is made available to the public and updated annually starting January 1, 2021. This layer is part of the 2026 Aquifer Risk Map. The Fund Expenditure Plan states the risk map will be used by Water Boards staff to help prioritize areas for available SAFER funding.

This service contains multiple layers:

State Small Water Systems - best available location information from Division of Drinking Water for state small water systems (5-14 connections) joined with water quality risk information from the 2026 Aquifer Risk Map

Source Water Quality Data - point location of wells used to calculate water quality risk estimates

Water Quality Risk by Section - water quality risk for all contaminants by square mile section, including estimated domestic well counts per section and estimated state small water system counts per section

Water Quality Risk by Section for five individual contaminants (nitrate, arsenic, uranium, hexavalent chromium, and 1,2,3-Trichloropropane),

Census Tracts - summarized demographic information from the 2023 American Community Survey five-year estimates (median household income - B19013_001 and race ethnicity - B03002) and summarized domestic well/state small water system risk information from the 2026 Aquifer Risk Map

Census Block Groups - summarized demographic information from the 2023 American Community Survey five-year estimates (median household income - B19013_001 and race ethnicity - B03002) and summarized domestic well/state small water system risk information from the 2026 Aquifer Risk Map.

The water quality risk is based on depth-filtered, de-clustered water quality results from a variety of well types.
