description: Satellite imagery from June 2002 – April 2012 was used to assess CyanoHAB trends in over 250 large lakes throughout California. This layer, provided by the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), shows the monthly counts at select lakes where cyanobacteria concentrations exceed risk thresholds. Count_NoDa – Number of months no data (< 18 pixels) Count_20k – Number of months (10,232 - 20,000 cells/mL) Count_100k – Number of months (20,000 – 100,000 cells/mL) Count_1m – Number of months (100,000 – 1,000,000 cells/mL) Count_gt1m – Number of months (> 1,000,000 cells/mL) Data limitations: Satellite imagery has been used previously in Florida, Ohio, and New England. An initial assessment of satellite data for California lakes showed good agreement with known bloom conditions (Stumpf et al., 2017), but some false positive readings may exist based on unique environmental conditions for some California water bodies. For example, due to apparent interference high elevation lakes analysis was limited until a review by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists can provide any needed corrections to the data. Until then, the satellite data should be considered provisional and used with caution.
